Watch trailer: Saba Qamar & Irrfan Khan in ‘Hindi Medium’.
Pakistani actors have been really lucky for Bollywood in the recent past, mainly because none of their movies have done a bad job at the box office. The recent trend was started by Pakistani pop star Ali Zafar, who appeared in London Paris New York alongside Aditi Rao Hydari in 2012. After that, Humaima Malick, Fawad Khan and Imran Abbas, all three of them appeared in one Indian film each in 2014.
While Humaima Malick and Imran Abbas failed to get another prominent job in the big bad world of Bollywood, Fawad Khan and Ali Zafar went on to work under gigantic banners such as Dharma Productions and Yash Raj Films. More recently Mahira Khan shocked everyone with her crazy-hyped debut in Raees, alongside Shah Rukh Khan.
The most recent addition the Bollywood’s newfound Pakistani club is Saba Qamar, who has mainly been a television actor back home, exactly like Mahira and Fawad. She is all set to grace the Indian cinema scenes with her movie, Hindi Medium opposite Irrfan Khan.
The trailer was released today and it looks really promising, largely because Irffan Khan’s movies are always content driven in nature. Saba Qamar also has mostly taken up content-rich scripts on television.
Though the movie seems to have been made on similar lines as Sridevi starrer English Vinglish, but the plot is obviously different. Saba and Irrfan will be seen playing parents of a young girl, who is at the stage of getting the right school picked for herself. They want her in an English medium school, because otherwise their daughter won’t fit into the society.
With moments of both intensity and light hearted comedy, signature Irrfan Khan style, the trailer really forces the viewer to think. The Indian-Pakistani culture, in general, is obsessed with English, and it’s certainly not their fault. Shedding light on such an issue is the need of the hour, and we are glad another content driven movie is coming our way.
As for the film’s screening in Pakistan, it is quite hard to say anything yet. Raees was banned in Pakistan, and Hindi Medium might be facing the same. HM revolves around the idea of ‘Padhega India, Badhega India‘, and is basically in interest of the country’s literacy rate. Looking at the trend, this movie might get banned too, in our opinion, simply because it has a Pakistani actor promoting India’s social cause. Even if it’s not an isssue for the Pakistani censor board, the emotional public of the country is sure to bash the actreess for taking up such a film.
Directed by Saket Chaudhary and produced by Dinesh Vijen, the movie is slated for a May 12th release this year. Tell us what you think of the trailer in the comments below.
