Movie review: Namaloom Afraad – 2.

by Leena Muzzafar.

The Namaloom Afraad series had my attention since the first part came out in 2014, mainly because it introduced the Pakistani movie industry with a new genre altogether. Like the last part, the second instalment is also a lot more than love. It’s about friendship, mutual interest, and loads of hide and seek.

Namaloom Afraad 2 is a sequel to Namaloom Afraad, and not just a movie in the same franchise, to clear out the confusion in start, and all the main characters, Naina (Urwa Hocane), Farhan (Fahad Mustafa), Moon (Mohsin Abbas Haider) and Shakeel (Javed Sheikh) are seen reprising their roles from the first part. The movie starts with Naina and Farhan, who are now not that rich anymore, receiving Moon’s (who now lives in South Africa) wedding card only moments after they were thinking about him. Since Moon sent them air tickets too, the trio, Shakeel, Naina and Farhan waste no more time and fly all the way to attend Moon’s wedding ceremony, who is all set to get married to Pari (Hania Aamir), only to find out later that it wasn’t all that easy.

We are then introduced with Sheikh Sultan-Al-Baklava (Nayyar Ejaz), who is visiting South Africa all the way from UAE, and the former country is doing everything to make sure they provide him with the best services until his visit ends. Amidst all this, a desi duo of gangsters flee with Sheikh’s gold pot from his hotel, which also had diamonds in it. Somehow, the pot gets delivered to Moon’s house, mistaken for Pari’s wedding dress, because both things were being carried in a similar looking courier box. The Sheikh pledges that he will not p**p anywhere but his gold pot, and that’s where the tension starts. The movie then unfolds and takes us through some crazy happenings in the backdrop of a beautiful wedding.

The film’s concept is not very alien to the Pakistani audiences, since many Bollywood movies have been made on the same lines in the past, including Hera Pheri, in fact, the first part of NMA got compared to it instantly. Still, the movie succeeds in keeping you on your seat for all 2 hours.

The performances surprised me a little, and the ones I was expecting less from, totally outshined. While Fahad Mustafa and Urwa Hocane are total naturals, at least in the NMA series (both parts), Mohsin Abbas Haider surprised with his seamless talent, and owned almost all the scenes he was seen in. We are certain there’s a lot more coming from this powerhouse of talent in the future. Nayyar Ejaz was phenomenal in his character, and possibly no one could have played the part better than him. Saleem Mairaj, after impressing with his role in Mann Mayal, was fabulous, and a total natural. Marina Khan was also seen in the movie, as Moon’s mother in law, and did an amazing job at whatever she was given.

The comedy, at most instances is totally subtle, yet cracking. A scene where Moon, Farhan and Shakeel wear a burkha to entice Sheikh, was simply hilarious and had me off my seat. Similarly, there were jokes on several people, ranging from Amir Liaquat to pornstars.

There are not a lot of songs in the film, mainly because they are mostly situational ones that completely suit the film’s genre. Having said that, we all are aware of  the hype  surrounding Kaif O Suroor by Aima Baig, featuring Sadaf Kanwal, and in all honesty, it was a total audio visual heaven. Apart from Kaif O Suroor, the music director Shani Arshad surprised us with a soulful  song, Heeray, sang by Mohsin Abbas Haider, and it was just amazing. Chal Hug Lay and Nach Nach by are your typical beach and wedding songs respectively, and leave you well entertained.

On the whole, Namaloom Afraad 2 is a delightful ride and a light watch, and Nabeel Qureshi’s yet another attempt at giving desi audiences something new or probably off their taste. But at the same time, it is definitely one of those movie you would not really repent missing, depending on your taste.
